Fifth, eighth, and twelfth grade Students of the Year from six schools in Plaquemines Parish competed on Friday, December 11, 2009, at the Woodland Central Office for the parish titles. The Plaquemines Parish Students of the Year are Katie Hotard, a fifth-grader at Boothville-Venice Elementary; Keshawn Espadron, an eighth grader from Belle Chasse Middle; and Meagan Navarre, a senior at Belle Chasse High School.
Competition was still in all three categories. To even be considered for Student of the Year at one's school, a student must have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Recognitions and awards, as well as evidence of leadership, service, and citizenship, are also taken into account. As part of the competition at the district level, students presented an academic portfolio, write an impromptu composition, and are interviewed by a panel of seven judges. The three parish winners will go on to complete for the regional title on January 26, 2010 at the St. Mary Parish School Board in Centerville, Louisiana.
Other contestants in the fifth grade division were Hope Galloway from Belle Chasse Middle, Yamane Hill from Phoenix High, and Toiya Ragas from South Plaquemines Elementary. Nicolette Williams represented South Plaquemines High in the eighth grade competition. South Plaquemines High senior, Sarah Nguyen, and Phoenix senior, Kiedra Brocks, competed for the 12th grade title.
We are proud of all of our Students of the Year!
