In her junior year at Belle Chasse High School, Kayla Reed, a student in Doug Schilling's American History class, entered the local Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge Essay Contest. She was one of three students to win the contest. These three students won a trip to Philadelphia to meet other students from around the country. Over the summer, the national committee meets and reads the essays. In her senior year, Kayla was announced as a national essay winner. She was presented the George Washington Medal at the Freedoms Foundation luncheon on Wednesday, May 12, 2010. This is the second year in a row that Belle Chasse High School has had a national winner. Congratulations Kayla and BCHS!
